"TAINTED BLOOD"

Nina Hobson

[Novel]

“Come on out Ron,” coaxed Kevin jokingly, “I’ll help you fix your bike.”  “Okay,” Answered back a voice from the dark alley to his left.  Out came the kid on his flat-tired bike moving directly under the streetlight yet somehow managing to stay cloaked by the darkness.  “I’ve got some tools over by that garbage can; we could have it fixed in no time."  “That’s okay I don’t need’em, I’ve got the only tool I need right here,” Said Kevin as he flicked open his switchblade slowing his pace even more to savor the moment.  This time he was going to gut the boy and leave him for rat food in that alley.  Kevin expected Ron to scream or cry or try to run but the kid did none of those things.  Instead he climbed off his bicycle and began walking towards him.  Kevin’s steps faltered and he stopped dead in his tracks.  So did the other kid still seeming to drag the darkness along with him.  Something felt terribly wrong about the situation now.  “Hey kid, who else you got with ya?” taunted Kevin hesitantly.  Kevin could be mean and cruel but he wasn’t stupid.  He knew that two, three or more against him and knife or no knife…it was over.   “Nobody else…Kev just me,” Said Ron in a strangely toneless voice.  As the boy he had assaulted earlier started slowly walking forward again, Kevin began backing up.  No, something definitely wasn't right...."

Nina Hobson

[Novel]

“Having finished mentally berating her brand new wardrobe and sighing again at the still-tagged clothes, she sat down on her window seat to look around her neighborhood.  The first thing to catch her eye was the house across the street.  It was the ugliest house design she’d ever seen with its chipped paint and funny looking windows but what made it especially hideous was it was it belonged to the principal of her new school.  He had moved into it last week.  The principal of all people!  But the way he looked, he fit right in with the design.  Mabel had gotten a closer look at him when he came over to introduce himself to her family almost the minute all his furniture was moved inside of his house.  A strange looking man he was with a bald head and thick glasses over beady little eyes that stared right through her.  A couple of times Mabel thought she caught him staring and smiling at her but she wasn’t quite sure enough to be concrete...."

Nina Hobson

[Collection of Short Stories]

“Told me the whole story of his family being from some God forsaken place and how there were no doctors there and the folks had to doctor themselves.  All this while I’m in the backseat itching and scratching up a storm mentally kicking myself for not bringing my hairbrush with me.    The cab driver says yeah and where they lived, there was always stuff brushing up against them making them itch and burn so his mother and his aunt started experimenting with whatever kinds of stuff mixed together hoping it would soothe their skin.  They finally came up with the right salve and when applied correctly gets rid of your ailment overnight.  Well, let’s just say I knew I was listening to the one that needed a headshrinker but I asked him questions anyway.  What kinds of questions?  Well the kind of questions any respectable person would ask like:  Where was he from?  What was in the mixture?  If it was so great, why didn’t they sell it and become millionaires?  The usual.  Of course he didn’t give me any straight answers but when he dropped me off in front of my building and collected his fare, he did give me a number to call.  He said to use it to get in touch with him when I was tired of tearing my skin open...."
